Drama - Specialty Fare Topping Wide Releases Per Theater

While the general box office turned out to be especially disappointing over the Christmas holiday weekend, so-called specialty fare did strong business in limited release. Opening on Christmas day, Warner Bros.' 9/11 drama Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close earned $70,518 at 6 theaters -- or a solid $11,753 per theater. It was expected to boost that figure to $136,000 on Monday. Focus Features' critically well-received Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy continued to draw crowds as it earned $1.2 million at 55 theaters -- or $22,000 per theater. China's Oscar entry, Zhang Yimou's The Flowers of War , which opened in one theater in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles earned $42,000 -- or about $14,000 per theater. But Angelina Jolie's In the Land of Blood and Honey opened unimpressively, earning $27,827 in three theaters -- or an average of $9,276 per theater.
