Michelle Williams Says 'Heath Ledger's Death Made Me Crazy'
The sadness of Heath Ledger’s death resonated throughout Hollywood, but it was especially hard on Michelle Williams, who was engaged to the late actor and is the mother of his child.
Williams opened up about Ledger’s death in an teary-eyed interview with GQ.
“It was making me crazy,” Williams said of grieving for her loved one. She also says the paparazzi were photographing her and her daughter’s every move.
“I felt like I was going crazy. It was just too much—trying to deal with what happened and trying to deal with what was at our doorstep. I just felt trapped."
Michelle and Heath once showed their disdain for the paparazzi while on vacation in Mexico. They were photographed proudly presenting their middle fingers while Heath held up a sign that read: “F-ck Off."
The Golden Globe winner continued:
"It's not just me - there's somebody else who I'm trying to protect (daughter Matilda), and I can't. I can't make it stop, I can't make it go away. Trying to find ways to explain it or shield her from it. It's like you're trying to go about your life, and make dinner."
She described her romance with Ledger as “cosmic.”
“Our initial meeting, the circumstances of how we first met, were cosmic or something," Williams said. "Yeah, a lot of things happened at once. It's a bit like: We had a lot of things to do, because we didn't have a lot of time, or something."
The couple split in 2007, with Heath’s surmounting drug problem reportedly to be the blame. A friend of the couple’s told the press:
“Heath was a very shy, insecure man. But in celebrity circles you need something to ground you, and for him that was being a father and the idea that Michelle might still take him back and they might still be a family.”
When asked if she thought the two might have ended up together had the tragedy not occurred, Williams grew teary-eyed.
“It’s one of my favorite things to imagine,” Williams said.
